This pilgrim flask, one of the rare porcelains produced in the Medici factory, is an example of the earliest porcelain made in Europe. By the late 1500s, maiolica wares had begun to decline in popularity among the affluent. Pilgrim flasks like this example were made by blowing a flask of a standard shape and then compressing it to a flattened form. The name of this vessel derives from the canteen-like bottles once carried by pilgrims.
